From Training to Performance
The Return on Investment of Craft Training in the Contruction Industry
Creating a formal training program is a major investment, and contractors want to know they are getting good, measurable value.
The National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) sought to explore the true ROI of construction training. Based on a multi-year research project with data from more than 1,400 craft workers and nearly 200 employers, the results are clear: formal training programs offer contractors significant operational benefits.
Key Findings
-
Companies that train report higher productivity, lower rework frequency, improved safety, and enhanced ability to retain talent.
-
Formally trained workers reach proficiency faster than those trained only through inform on-the-job methods, and show better performance in areas like communication, teamwork and accountability.
- Despite the benefits for contractors, many craft professionals report receiving little or no training. Of those who do receive training, many say they were responsible for paying for at least part of it.
